I’m not a runner, but I’m trying to be one. When my kids were really little and I needed to be near them all of the time, I invested in a treadmill. We kept it in the living room, that way I could run during their nap time or if they were playing. Between my jogging and Weight Watchers I lost all of my pregnancy weight and more. I felt AMAZING and I looked great.
I have done ran 10ks and many 5ks, never for the sake of competition against others, just myself. Now I do them just to prove to myself that I am still able to. I rarely train for them, just go for it. I feel so proud every time I cross the finish line! That’s what keeps me going.
In 2017, I had challenged myself to run four 5ks. Here was my plan:
- March 4th Green Lake with Shasta
- July 11th Shore Run
- September 10th West Seattle
- December 3rd Candy Cane K9 with Shasta
The first three went great! I challenged myself each time and stayed consistent with the amount of running versus walking through the race. The final race was the same weekend that I went to Minnesota to meet my new nephew. I gladly went to snuggle him and didn’t realize until the week before Christmas that I had missed my fourth race and wouldn’t make my goal.
But don’t worry! I met my goal! I have access to treadmills at the gym! So on Friday, December 29th, I hopped on the treadmill at the gym and ran a 5k. Was it exactly how I thought I’d complete this goal? Nope. Does it still “count”? Sure, why not? Who gets to decide the rules? Me. I set this goal and I crushed it. It actually felt so good to run that 5k, I set a new goal for 2018: 5k FriYays! That’s right! Every Friday is going to be 5k FriYay! You will find me at 24 Hour Fitness in Renton on the treadmill, running my little heart out.
Will it be perfect? Nope. Will I miss a week? I hope not. But I’m going to be doing it because God has given me a capable body and a determined mind and I plan to use both of them to crush this goal. Check out my Instagram feed for pictures of my sweaty self on 5k FriYays!
